Still dreaming of studying in Australia? Start with a plan, not the headlines
Visa headlines can feel overwhelming. Here is how to turn uncertainty into a practical study plan without ignoring the requirements.

You do not need a dramatic story to explain why you want to study. You need clear reasons, honest answers and evidence that fits your circumstances.
“What should I say so they believe me?” It is an understandable question when the Genuine Student requirement feels intimidating. But the best place to start is not a clever phrase. It is the real reason you want to take this course.
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement applies to Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. Home Affairs wants to understand your circumstances and whether studying is your primary reason for applying.
The online application asks about your current circumstances, why you chose your course and provider in Australia, and how completing the course will benefit you. There is also space for other relevant information, and some applicants must answer an additional question.
Answers must be in English, with a maximum of 150 words per response. That is not much room, so be specific. Instead of “Australia has excellent education,” explain which features of your chosen course matter to you and why.
Imagine someone who has worked in hospitality and now wants formal training in the field. Their explanation could connect their work experience, the skills they need and the course they researched. This is an example of how to think—not a script to copy.
A change of direction or a study gap needs an honest explanation. Do not hide it or invent a neat timeline. Home Affairs considers your overall circumstances, including previous study, employment and immigration history.
Home Affairs gives more weight to statements backed by evidence. Academic records, employment information and documents about your circumstances can help support what you say. Only include accurate material that genuinely relates to your situation.
Keep your answers consistent with your records. Do not claim a salary, job offer or family circumstance that you cannot substantiate. An agent can help you understand what information is being requested, but the answers must remain yours.
Home Affairs explicitly recognises that genuine students may develop skills Australia needs and may later choose to apply for permanent residence. Future intentions of that kind do not count against an applicant under GS. However, studying must still be the primary purpose of this visa, and neither enrolment nor a Student visa guarantees a later visa or permanent residence.
Feeling unsure does not mean you have nothing worthwhile to say. Contact Smart Education Link to discuss your course interests and education background. We can help you understand your options and provider requirements; for advice about your individual visa eligibility, consult a registered migration agent or Australian legal practitioner.
