DO I NEED A VISA TO STUDY IN AUSTRALIA?

If you intend to study for more than 3 months, then you must have a valid student visa. As an international student you must be enrolled in a full-time course (20 hours per week study). If you wish to study for less than 3 months, you don’t need to apply for a student visa and it can be done under a tourist visa.

CAN I COME TO AUSTRALIA ON A TOURIST VISA AND CHANGE IT FOR A STUDENT VISA?

It depends on your tourist visa conditions but in general yes if you do not have No Further Stay condition (8503, 8534 or 8535) attached on your tourist visa

HOW LONG CAN I APPLY STUDENT VISA FOR?

The length of the student visa will depend on the length of the course or combination of courses taken by the student.

CAN I TRAVEL WHILE STUDYING?

Yes, you can travel but please make sure during term/semester breaks and holiday to avoid unnecessary problems. You will need to maintain good attendance each term/semester during your study as required by the education provider.

DO I NEED INSURANCE? WHAT IS AN OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER (OSHC)?

It is compulsory for all international students who study in Australia to have health insurance (i.e. OSHC) before applying for a student visa. You need to be covered for the whole duration of your study and stay in Australia.

OSHC assists international students to meet the costs of medical and hospital care that may arise while they are in Australia; it includes cover for ambulance and limited pharmaceuticals (as listed in the Medicare Benefit Schedule MBS).

IS THERE AN INTERNET ACCESS AT SCHOOL AND DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT?

In general all the education providers will provide free internet access for its students. You can access the internet but with the education provider’s limitation/allowance.

CAN I CONTINUE IN MY STUDIES ONCE MY COURSE HAS FINISHED? CAN YOU HELP ME?

As a holder of Australian student visa, when you finish your study you have 28 days to decide if you want to continue with your study or leave the country. We can help you with the relevant information.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO LEARN PROPER ENGLISH?

It will depend on each person individually and how much effort you put into your studies.

CAN I STUDY OUTSIDE OF SYDNEY – AUSTRALIA?

Yes, because some of the education providers have campuses in other states (for example: in Melbourne – VIC, Hobart – TAS, etc.). International students can choose the location of the campus they want to study with those education providers.

CAN I APPLY FOR A STUDENT VISA IF I AM WORKING NOW? Yes, you can, providing you can fulfil the minimum academic and English requirements from the education provider where you will study.

Generally the minimum academic requirement is completion of Year 12.

AM I ALLOWED TO WORK DURING MY STUDY IN AUSTRALIA AND HOW MANY HOURS CAN I WORK AS A STUDENT

If you are an Australian student visa holder and there is 8105 visa condition attached on your visa, you are allowed to work for a maximum of 40 hours fortnightly (fortnightly is a 14 days period of time starting on Monday each week) when the study/training is in session and only after the course start/commence.

If you are an Australian student dependent visa holder and there is 8104 visa condition attached on your visa, you are only allowed to work for a maximum of 40 hours fortnightly (fortnightly is a 14 days period of time starting on Monday each week). For family members of the student studying master by research or doctorate degree, unlimited work rights applied.

WHICH TRANSPORT DOES AUSTRALIA HAVE? HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

Australia has a variety of transportations options available including buses, trains, ferries, light rails, etc. The fares will depend on the city you will live in and the transportation you choose to use.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF LIVING IN AUSTRALIA?

The cost of living in Australia probably will be more expensive than when we live with our parents. However, every international student has the opportunity to work for a maximum of 40 hours fortnightly during their study and stay in Australia. A weekly budget will depend on your lifestyle, but it usually starts from AUD$400 a week (for accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment and transport).
